Meet the farmer

Around 226 smallholder farmers deliver their ripe coffee cherries to the Nkara washing station, part of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative. Founded in 2000, the Fairtrade-certified cooperative is recognised not only for producing exceptional coffee but also for investing in local communities. Around 80% of its producers are women, and profits have helped improve incomes, build schools, provide healthcare and support farming families across the region.

Coffee story

Established in 2007, the Nkara washing station was created to give farmers in Rwanda's rugged northern hills access to high-quality coffee processing close to their farms. Cherries are carefully hand-selected, sorted by density and slowly dried on raised African beds for up to 45 days. Throughout the drying process they are regularly turned and inspected to ensure an even, consistent finish, resulting in a naturally sweet and beautifully balanced cup.

Growing region

Nkara is located in Rwanda's Gakenke District, close to Volcanoes National Park in the country's mountainous Northern Province. Often called the "Land of a Thousand Hills", Rwanda's combination of volcanic soils, high elevations between 1,800 and 2,100 metres, abundant sunshine and tropical rainfall provides ideal conditions for growing Bourbon coffee with remarkable sweetness, clarity and complexity.
